Believe it or Not

What old men do is think
that life has turned out crap
and will get worse.
They also think that this
is what old men suppose
they ought to think.
How dawns, quite golden once,
are now sore memories
chafed by times past.
A crying shame? Yet think --
what else to weep about
in the small hours
when old men reach the brink
of darkness, that abyss
that yawns beneath
whatever old men think.
